People often say that social media is "toxic". But that is 100% YOUR choice! Here's how to make social media great again! With a couple of smart actions you can completely tune out all the negativity and drama. Instead, you can easily tune into more positivity and education. Sound good? Let's go!
Social media gets a bad rap. You’ve heard it before – it’s toxic, it’s addictive, it’s ruining your productivity. But what if I told you that social media is only as toxic as you make it? Yes, you heard that right. You’re not just a passive victim of the algorithm; you are the algorithm. And that’s your secret weapon to turn social media into a positive, uplifting, and useful tool.
Here’s how to make social media great again (and no, you don't need to build a wall).
First, we need to address the elephant in the room:
Social media algorithms aren’t plotting to destroy your goals, ambitions, or life. The only thing they care about is keeping you on their platform so they can shove more ads your way and make some $$$.
That’s it.
The algorithm simply serves you what you engage with most.
If your feed is full of negativity, drama, or pointless memes about someone’s ex (yours?), that’s because you’ve been interacting with it. How's that for self reflection? The truth is that you ARE the algorithm! If social media feels toxic to you, it's because you chose for it to be toxic!
But here’s the good news: You ARE the algorithm!
Because the algorithm's goal is to show you more content around the things you interact with, we can use this to our advantage! You can make social media great again by teaching it to show you more positive content. Content that helps you achieve your goals and learn new things.
Notifications are the digital equivalent of someone tapping you on the shoulder every 3 minutes to say, “Hey, look at me!” They’re designed to distract you and pull you back into the app. These notifications are designed for the platform's goals, NOT yours!
Want to skyrocket your focus and stop being a slave to your phone?
Here’s what you do:
The only notifications you could consider keeping are phone calls (in case of emergencies) and the alarms you set yourself. Everything else? Bin it! Trust me, you're not missing anything important.
Think of this as spring cleaning for your digital life.
Trash out the junk so you can make space for the good stuff.
Start by asking yourself:
What are my goals?
Who do I want to become?
What skills do I want to learn?
What kind of energy and people do I want in my life?
Write those answers down. Use them as your guidelines for cleaning up your social media feeds & following.
Your Cleanup Toolkit:
For this to work, you need to be relentless about it for a few days. When you start the process I outline above, your algorithm still thinks you like the "old" stuff. You'll likely continue to see the same type of content for a few days while it adjusts.
Don't engage with that content.
Don't follow those pages again.
Scroll past them, don't watch the reel.
Don't unblock after you block someone.
Ignore everything not in alignment with your goals!
Have you ever gotten 8267 mixed signals from a girl? It confuses the heck out of you, doesn't it? Don't be like that when you're telling the social media platform what kind of content you want to see!
Once you’ve cleared out the nonsense, it’s time to build a feed that actually benefits you. Think of it this way – empty feeds don’t stay empty for long. If you don’t actively fill the void, the platforms will serve you more random junk.
Don’t give them the chance!
Here’s how we'll curate your dream feed:
Short-form snippets are like fast food – they give you a quick dopamine hit, but leave you feeling empty. Instead, find creators who share in-depth, actionable, and insightful content that aligns with your goals. Think of it like a hearty, nutritious meal – satisfying and good for you.
Pro tip: Start with blogs, podcast and longer YouTube videos. Focus on creators that make you think, offer deeper knowledge and that you respect. Then try to find these creators on the other platforms if possible.
In step 2, you told the algorithm what you don't want to see. Now, it's wondering "Soooo... what DO you want to see instead?". Let's make it obvious what you want.
Train your algorithm through:
Pro Tip:
Sometimes platforms will offer surveys about your experience. Instagram is testing a feature where they let you reset your entire feed. YouTube occasionally lets you customize your home feed from a variety of videos.
Whenever you see these pop up, use them.
With all this talk about making social media a better place, there's something we need to discus:
Using social media with purpose!
The truth is that learning for the sake of learning is just procrastination.
No matter how positive and educational social media is, it will not help you achieve your goals! So first get started working on your goals until you get stuck. Once you get stuck, go to social media to learn the skills you need to fix the problem you're facing.
Continue until the next roadblock and then continue learning to fix that issue.
Remember, YOU are the algorithm.
Train it well by choosing positivity, knowledge, and connection.
But... that's just the beginning.
